The tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus) is a small deer near-endemic to the south of china. It is easily reconized by its enlarged canines and very small antlers. The species occurs in forests, mainly on hillsides, and is a browsing herbivore. In zoos they are kept either individually, in a pair or trio, but always with only one adult male. The tufted deer is named after its tuft of long, spiny hairs on top of the head in between the ears.
