The story of the Mediterranean monk seal is quite tragic, eradicated by fishermen and pushed off the beaches where it lived due to human disturbance, these seals now breed in dangerous sea caves and rocky shores to avoid human contact, diminishing the survival rate of their pups. The two largest populations are at extreme opposites of its original range and cannot interact due to humans, which threatens their genetic diversity.
